Summary

From the bestselling author of Good Girl, Bad Girl and When You Are Mine comes a gripping thriller featuring the brilliant forensic psychologist Cyrus Haven as he becomes embroiled in an explosive murder case with disturbing origins。

Criminal psychologist Cyrus Haven and Evie Cormac return in this “powerhouse of a novel” (Booklist, starred review) from internationally bestselling author Michael Robotham, a writer Stephen King calls “an absolute master。。。with heart and soul。”

Who is Evie, the girl with no past, running from? She was discovered hiding in a secret room in the aftermath of a terrible crime。 Her ability to tell when someone is lying helped Cyrus crack an impenetrable case in Good Girl, Bad Girl。 Now, the closer Cyrus gets to uncovering answers about Evie’s dark history, the more he exposes Evie to danger, giving her no choice but to run。 Ultimately, both will have to decide if some secrets are better left buried and some monsters should never be named。。。

Disappointed to wait for #3 now。 But another great novel from one of my favorite authors。 Love the narration on the audio book too。

3。75 really。 I like Cyrus and I like Evie, and the ending was satisfying enough for me to go and try to find out if there were others in the series。 (not yet)。

Robotham, altijd goed, altijd spannend。

Great read。 You definitely need to have read book 1, Good Girl Bad Girl to appreciate the excellent character development。 This dark backstory was slower paced than book one, but I am looking forward to book 3。

Man, I was so excited to get more of the story of Evie, but this book just totally lost me。 Part of the problem may have been I listened to the audio version (the narrator's voice for Evie was just terrible), but I kept losing track of the characters! There were too many bad guys and not enough time given to any of them for me to understand truly who was who。 Evie's origin story also was a little out there and didn't feel like it fit。 I just thought it would all make more sense to me in the end! I decided to read this novel after Barnes & Noble named it a "Monthly Pick" for July, and I read the synopsis in my local store。 I'm very glad I did。 Although I realized about halfway through the book that it was the sequel to "Good Girl, Bad Girl" - so I was bummed that I didn't read that one first。 (I've since picked it up and look forward to going back and reading it。)Mr。 Robotham's storytelling style reminds me a lot of the American author Keith Ablow's storytelling style - albeit less dark I decided to read this novel after Barnes & Noble named it a "Monthly Pick" for July, and I read the synopsis in my local store。 I'm very glad I did。 Although I realized about halfway through the book that it was the sequel to "Good Girl, Bad Girl" - so I was bummed that I didn't read that one first。 (I've since picked it up and look forward to going back and reading it。)Mr。 Robotham's storytelling style reminds me a lot of the American author Keith Ablow's storytelling style - albeit less dark and certainly less gruesome。 I loved his penchant for "broken" protagonists, and both forensic psychologist Cyrus Haven and young victim Evie Cormac certainly qualify as "broken。"I never go into plot details in these reviews to avoid "spoilers," but I will say that the author did a good job of taking a rather worn plot line (a pedophilia ring being protected by some of the most powerful men and institutions in the land) and making it fresh。 It never felt cliched or stale。 On the contrary, I found it to be quite a page turner。 As I said above, I'm looking forward to reading "Good Girl, Bad Girl。" And I hope he continues the Cyrus Haven series。 Even if he doesn't, I may go back and read some of his other novels, given how much I liked this one。。。it's always such fun to discover a new author! 。。。more

Fast paced read about a girl “in hiding” from ruthless killers and the psychologist who tries to help her。 Even without reading the first Cyrus Haven book, this story was easy to understand, although the ending was somewhat unclear。

Geweldige schrijver。 Dit is het 2de deel van de serie en ik kijk uit naar de volgende。

The pace of this book was brilliant and the first of Michael's books I have read。 It will not be the last! I have ordered more and will happily work my way through his back catalogue。 I read a lot of books and so when I find a completely new to me, author it is a delight。 This book is gritty and realistic, but also does not go into the detail that I would find difficult to read。 You are able to understand everything without the difficult graphic descriptions that some authors go into。 This is a The pace of this book was brilliant and the first of Michael's books I have read。 It will not be the last! This is my first Robotham read and although I consider the author a skilled writer and I wanted to know everything about Evie, I find the format of switching chapter by chapter from Cryus to Evie irritating。 Both characters revealed much of their back story through LOTS of random flashbacks。 So many to the point of interfering with the flow of the plot。 There was no build up to suspense or anything close to scary。 This is not a thriller。 If Evie’s story would have been told in real time, that is This is my first Robotham read and although I consider the author a skilled writer and I wanted to know everything about Evie, I find the format of switching chapter by chapter from Cryus to Evie irritating。 Both characters revealed much of their back story through LOTS of random flashbacks。 So many to the point of interfering with the flow of the plot。 There was no build up to suspense or anything close to scary。 This is not a thriller。 If Evie’s story would have been told in real time, that is, the reader could share in her fright, I would have enjoyed the read。 I thought the first half of the book was better than the last。 I almost quit reading when Ruby was killed。 Repetitively we are told that Evie lives in fear, always looking over her shoulder and needing identity protection from the authorities because the men who killed Terry are looking for her。 Yet, when she escapes from Langford Hall, she throws caution to the wind, walking in broad daylight, speaking to people, getting on a boat with a stranger, staying the night on the boat, even lounging on the boat as friends of his come and go to visit。 This is so out of character for Evie that the plot lost all credibility with me。 The back stories unfolded too slowly and the flashbacks too numerous。 Not being from the UK and being locked up for most of her life, I thought the ease at which Evie navigates the country in year 2020 unrealistic。 I also take issue with the subject matter。 I know this is mirroring a somewhat similar true story in the news in the last few years。 That premise always bothers me。 After a year of Covid and politics, I need a more uplifting, inspiring read。 I have no desire to back up and read the first in this series or to read any future ones。 。。。more

I had to get past the very descriptive writing, not that it was bad it really set the scene。 What an amazing story, I couldn't put the book down once I got to know the characters。 What's scary is knowing that there are such sick, deviant people in this world。 Definitely recommend this book。 I had to get past the very descriptive writing, not that it was bad it really set the scene。 What an amazing story, I couldn't put the book down once I got to know the characters。 What's scary is knowing that there are such sick, deviant people in this world。 Definitely recommend this book。 。。。more

This book was just as good as the first one。 I liked that we learned more about Evie's identity and history but there's still a lot left to learn and still so many unanswered questions for the next books (hopefully)。 Memorable Quotes"The air outside smells of drying seaweed and woodsmoke; and the distant hills are edged in orange where God has opened the furnace door and stoked the coals for a new day。""In my experience, people tend to talk at me rather than to me。 They preach or they lecture, o This book was just as good as the first one。 I liked that we learned more about Evie's identity and history but there's still a lot left to learn and still so many unanswered questions for the next books (hopefully)。 Memorable Quotes"The air outside smells of drying seaweed and woodsmoke; and the distant hills are edged in orange where God has opened the furnace door and stoked the coals for a new day。""In my experience, people tend to talk at me rather than to me。 They preach or they lecture, or they hear what they want to hear。 But that’s not the reason I don’t answer。 I don’t trust the truth。 The truth is a story。 The truth is a habit。 The truth is a compromise。 The truth is a casualty。 The truth died long ago。""I’ll get a red card for what happened today。 I’m the queen of red cards。 I’m a royal flush。 Hearts and diamonds。" "I do not seek to belong or to protest or to be part of a culture; and my body is not a billboard or a message。 The needle is my escape and my salvation。 The needle turns art into suffering and suffering into art and speaks to nobody except me。" "Davina doesn’t notice until I'm halfway across the street。 She calls my name but I ignore her。 She's not the quickest mover in the world, not since she got pregnant and ate her own body weight in Nutella。""Terry rode the bike for hours and I clung to him like a kitten on a sweater as the wind cut through my clothes and my fingers and toes grew numb。""Listen to me, Scout。 Its not how strong you are, or how fast you are。 It’s how you react when you're scared。 You might have piss running down your legs, and your heart is in your throat, and you're shaking so hard you can’t think straight, but when the time comes, you can’t hesitate。 It’s not about your aim, or your speed, it’s about your conviction。""I am thirty-one years old and I have never been in love。 I have had flings, one-night stands and short intense infatuations, but no grand passions, never the real thing。 Why is that?
